Peaso not quite ready to hang up his boots

- SPORTS REPORTER

Peter MacDonald is trying to find the next generation of Rangers stars but he is already planning another season as Stirling Albion’s main striker.

MacDonald, along with Todd Lumsden, coaches the under-14s at The Hummel Training Centre and reckons he’s got some kids who could go all the way.

But the 38 year-old is still banging them in for the Binos with last month’s five-goal haul earning him the Ladbrokes League Two Player of the Month award.

And he’s not about to hang up his boots yet.

The former St Johnstone star said: “I still love it. There is a true saying that football will chuck you, you won’t chuck it but I still feel fit. I certainly feel I can play on next season.

“It’s always nice to score and I’m delighted to have netted five last month but we don’t really mind who scores as long as we’re winning.”

He added: “We had a lot of injuries at the start of the season with maybe five or six regulars missing so it’s been a big thing to get all of them back.

“The boys are all buying into what the manager Kevin Rutkiewicz has been asking us to do since he came in last year.

“We’ve only lost once in 11 which has been decent but we have to follow up in February what we did in January.”

MacDonald’s recent hat-trick against Albion Rovers was his first since he notched a treble for Morton in a 5-2 win over Airdrie at Cappielow in April 2013. and it took him up to eight goals for the campaign.

Last season he hit 11 for the Binos during their Ladbrokes League 2 campaign.

He said: “I think that’s my fourth career hat-trick. I scored two for St Johnstone, against Partick Thistle and Motherwell, when the boss Kevin Rutkiewicz was in my team, and the last one was for Morton against Airdrie.”

Peter said he had the best of both worlds because he is still playing and coaching at youth level at Rangers.

“We’ve got some very good players in the group that we feel can progress all the way through the ranks,” said the striker

“We follow a curriculum that is set out across all the age groups so we are all working on the same things week to week.

“There is a great group of coaches at the academy and we all help each other which is really good.”

Gaffer Rutkiewicz said after the Rovers match: “I actually said to him in my team talk about getting a hattrick so I might say it more often.

“For me he is the best finisher in the league - he has that natural ability to sniff out chances in the box.”
