County ace shares his rugby memories

-

Stirling County RFC Memories Group met on Tuesday.

The group, which aims to stimulate recollection through rugby debate and discussion, welcomed guests Willie Lambie and Ben Cairns to discuss their love of the game.

Willie Lambie, captain of Stirling County in 1950, talked about his memories of Stirling High School, as well as playing rugby for Stirling and becoming captain.

He reminded the group of the pleasures and hardships of playing in the 1940s and 50s, including his fond memories of taking on teams such as London Scottish and others in Glasgow, Perth, and Fife.

Willie recalled, in the time of rationing, having to ask his mother to use clothing vouchers to buy his County strip.

New Super Six coach Ben Cairns then gave an informative talk about his plans for Stirling County as they move into the Super Six era.

He hopes to build on the youth set-up at Stirling, the First XV backbone and build a powerhouse of Scottish rugby in Stirling.

Ben also spoke about how the club’s link with the university offers a variety of opportunities, as does the wider community of rugby in Stirling and Central Scotland.

He then took some questions, and explained part of his goal was to create a shared vision for the club through small group discussions.

The club has thanked Willie and Ben for an informative and entertaining afternoon.

The next meeting of the Memories Group will be on Tuesday, March 5, 1-3pm. There will be pancakes provided for Shrove Tuesday.
