be opened up to other internet service providers.

Ms Doherty said in terms of connectivity, the fibre they were laying had many advantages over the copper cabling used by most homes to link to the internet.

“It allows for greater innovation and productivity in businesses and improved smart tech at home,” she added. “It’s faster, a lot more reliable and many more devices can be connected to it.

“That enables, for example, users to take part in multi-player gaming and moving forward it will yield massive opportunities for accessing such things as healthcare services over the internet.

“There are 10 gigabit cities being built at the moment in the UK but we want Stirling the first to be completed. We have been working with business people, Stirling Council and elected members and there is real excitement about what fibre can deliver for the economy and for people. There are opportunities in the City Deal, with the new digital district being created, and fibre can make it come alive.”

Councillor Scott Farmer, leader of Stirling Council, added: “The installation of this infrastructure represents a transformational change for Stirling+ but introducing such change requires patience, effort and understanding from our communities, businesses and visitors.”

Director of digital and commercial operations for Vodafone UK Neil Blagden, said: “Broadband services which use full fibre connections are an immense improvement over ones based on old copper telephone lines. Vodafone Gigafast Broadband uses this gold-standard technology and we can’t wait to bring it to the residents of Stirling.”
