Seeing red as Rovers go out
CAMBUSBARRON ROVERS ...... 0 CALLANDER THISTLE ................ 3
Three red cards didn’t help Cambusbarron Rovers’cause as they went out of the East of Scotland Cup at the quarter-final stage to Callander Thistle.
The home side never got going and Callander were worthy winners over the piece and will meet in Edinburgh South Vics in the semi final on March 6.
Doune Castle will meet Pennies in the other semi on March 22 with both games at Falkirk Stadium.
Callander had a couple of half chances before Duncan Reid had a shot tipped over by the visiting keeper but the whole game changed when the Rovers keeper Davie Hegarty was sent off on 26 minutes for denying a goal scoring opportunity 25 yards from goal.
Then to compound matters, three minutes later Louis Waters joined him in the dressing room for deliberate hand ball and the free kick from outside the box took a deflection over replacement keeper Louis McPherson for a 1-0 lead which they held on to until half time.
Three minutes after the restart Callander extended their lead from a corner and they went further in front following another corner on 59 minutes to effectively tie up the result.
Rovers tried hard to get back into the match but it was made even more difficult when the referee decided that Chris Hendry had fouled the goalkeeper challenging for a high ball to complete his hat trick of straight red cards with 20 minutes to go.
