County stars share their rugby memories

-

Stirling County RFC had another meeting of their Memories Group last Tuesday.

The group, which aims to stimulate recollection through rugby debate and discussion, welcomed former players John Henderson and Gordon Park to discuss their time at the club.

Gordon talked about visiting Australia to see the 2001 British and Irish Lions tour and watching the Hong Kong Sevens of the same era.

He also brought a Murrayfield programme from 1990 - for a match costing just £10 - which led to discussion about where the sport is heading.

John Henderson had the group in stitches as he discussed his and Ally Logan’s trip to Australia in 1992 to see Scotland international and Stirling County alumni Kenny Logan’s first appearance for Scotland.

Dressed in official tour gear, John said they were often mistaken for players and struggled to correct the‘bewildered’ Australian public.

He also recalled a number of taxi trips to unexpected locations, bungee jumping in kilts, and surprising Kenny in a hotel room before his debut.

Stirling stalwart Jimmy Ward was also in attendance.

Known for his couthy pep talks, he recalled that once, upon hearing a youngster complain that the opposition looked‘awfy big’, he replied“aye and if they were any good, they widnae be playing us”.

The next meeting of the Memories Group will be on Tuesday, May 7, 1-3pm, with the final meeting of the season taking place the next month on June 4.
