Four communities across Stirling are to benefit from active travel action plans launched this week.

Forth Environment Link’s Active Travel Hub unveiled the plans yesterday (Tuesday) in Braehead, Bridge of Allan, Cornton and the Top of the Town.

Residents there have been working closely with the hub for the past 18 months to come up with new ways to get people in the communities out of their cars.

The project involved interviews with nearly 500 people and gave an insight into current levels of activity.

It revealed that in Bridge of Allan 49 per cent of the people who took part in the survey walk at least once per week, with 52 per cent in both Cornton and Braehead and 77 per cent at the Top of the Town.

The proportion of people in each area who do not have access to a bike is 40 per cent in Braehead, 39 per cent in Cornton, a quarter at the Top of the Town and just 16 per cent in Bridge of Allan.

FEL bike share officer, Chris James, said: “We want to encourage as many people as possible to travel actively in and around Stirling.

“During this project we discovered that many people wanted to make local journeys by bike, but some didn’t feel confident enough or perhaps didn’t have access to a bike.

“The plans include lots of practical measures to remedy this from cycle training and route planning advice, to bike maintenance workshops and bike share membership. We’ll also be working with the four communities to pursue Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Friendly Community Award.”

Bridge of Allan resident, Gabriella Farquhar, added: “It’s fantastic that the hub has taken time to listen to the community and highlight the concerns and issues faced by people who cycle or want to cycle.

“The challenge now is to work together to break down the barriers to active travel and engage with communities to make these recommendations a reality.”
