STIRLING HIGH
CREATIVE SUCCESS
Pupils visited The Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre last week to view the unveiling of their winning artwork on permanent display in the Education Room.
The competition run by the National Trust for Scotland, invited local schools and groups to design an interpretive panel to depict different parts of the history of the Battle of Bannockburn. Stirling High pupils were asked to tell the story of Sir Thomas Randolph’s schiltron defeating the English cavalry at St Ninians.
They were warmly welcomed into the centre and had the opportunity to try on replica uniforms from the time of the Battle of Bannockburn. Paul Cassidy, head teacher, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to contribute to our local heritage and visitors can all enjoy the creative success of our young people,”
The pupils’ artwork has been converted into large, permanent interpretation panel on display in the Education Room for all schools and general visitors to view and enjoy.
Young people from the local area were asked to design comic strip-style artwork (14 panels in total) depicting key moments from the Battle of Bannockburn, which, when viewed together will provide a coherent narrative of this famous event in Scottish history.
The pupils’ artwork shows how the English cavalry split off from the main army and attacked Sir Thomas Randolph’s schiltron at St Ninians. Randolph kept his men in the woods to give them extra protection and arranged them in a circle formation [like a hedgehog]. In the fighting that ensued, Randolph did not lose a single man, while several English knights were impaled on the points of the long Scottish spears.
