Student running workshop

An Alva landscape photographer will run his first workshop at this year’s Stirling Photography Festival which takes place throughout August and September.

Sam McDiarmid, a student at Forth Valley College, will also appear with Alec Finlay to talk about the artist and poet’s Day of Access project which gives disabled people the opportunity to access wild land.

Alec and Sam will talk at Stirling University on Wednesday August 28.

The second year photography student’s workshop is entitled ‘Discovering Landscapes’ and will be held on Sunday August 18 between 7pm and 9.30pm at a location yet to be announced.

Sam said: “Landscape photography has been a passion of mine since I first picked up a camera, so being chosen to document Alec’s pilot day was a great privilege.

“As part of the festival I’ll run a workshop, which I’m excited about as I’ve never taught before. Both of these experiences have brought me a lot of confidence.”

Sam’s workshop is among a range of free events during the festival, now in its second year.

They have been funded by Crowdfunding Stirling and include wildlife photography workshops with Mandy Williams at the Red Kites Centre, Argaty, and lighting painting at the Tolbooth.

There will also be photo walks conducted by Stirling historian and Stirling Local History Society member Andy McEwan on Thursday August 8 (Stirling’s Trading History) and Sunday August 11 (Churches of Stirling).

Andy commented: “As someone who loves Stirling and its history, leading walks as part of the photography festival is a great way to share my passion”.

Further exhibitions include a visiting collection entitled ‘Girls and their Mothers’ by photographer Kim Simpson, in partnership with Street Level Photoworks of Glasgow and the Macrobert Arts Centre.

There will also be an open call during August for public submissions to the ‘Hope and Passion’ exhibition which will run from September at venues across the city, including at the Smith Art Gallery and Museum, the Macrobert Arts Centre, and Made in Stirling.
