Sports building takes shape
A £20 million redevelopment of Stirling University’s sports facilities last week reached a‘major milestone’.
All three levels of the new sports building – due to open by summer, 2020 – are set for the next stage of development which will include the installation of a glass-based‘exterior envelope’.
Almost 5000 cubic metres of concrete and 260 tonnes of steel are now in place at the building site.
The new building, which looks to bring all the sports facilities under one roof, will include purpose-built studios, a fitness suite and threecourt sports hall, plus an indoor cycling studio, strength and conditioning area and a high performance suite.
Vice-chancellor professor Gerry McCormac said:“The sports facilities redevelopment is part of a significant investment we are making in our campus and it’s fantastic to see it progress at such a pace. The redevelopment will play a huge role in enhancing the student experience at Stirling.”
Cathy Gallagher, director of sport at the university, commented:“The new facilities are beginning to take shape and we’re now in a position to visualise how the finished product is going to look.”
Morrison Construction operation’s director, Allan Cunningham, added: “The completed 260-tonne steel frame has created an outline of the project, allowing the community to appreciate how the sports centre will fit into the campus once successfully delivered, and the internal works are now progressing.
As construction continues to progress, we will keep engaging with all community stakeholders.’’
