A ‘child poverty and inclusive growth’ summit took place in Clackmannanshire.
It coincided with the Poverty Alliance’s challenge poverty week (October 7 to October 14) which aimed to highlight work to help the poor across Scotland.
It is estimated that child poverty in Clackmannanshire is 27 per cent.
Contributions to the Clackmannanshire programme were made by economic development body Scottish Enterprise, voluntary groups and the council’s ruling SNP administration and Labour Group.
A summit attended by experts reflected on povertyrelated national policy and learning as well as good practice. There was also a schedule of activities on tackling child poverty and developing inclusive growth in Clackmannanshire. Clackmannanshire Council SNP leader councillor Ellen Forson and Labour leader Dave Clark were both involved.
Ms Forson said: “Tackling poverty is something we must do and do now as every day that passes has an impact on the life chances of the children and young people living in deprivation.
“Last week’s events were a start and we have to keep the momentum going to ensure we make a difference.”
Mr Clark added: “It would be too easy for me, as a Marxist, to argue it is all about money. Poverty is much more complicated than that, it is a house full of demons. The children in our communities living in poverty need to know that we stand shoulder to shoulder with them and will not let them go.”
