Jane Martin has hailed the Central Scotland Junior Open held at Bridge of Allan Sports Club as the perfect platform for her proteges’tilt at glory in this weekend’s British Junior Open at Nottingham.

A total of 52 youngsters from all over Scotland battled it out at Minewood last weekend in the Scottish Squash-sanctioned silver event which spanned seven divisions of fiercely fought action with Bridge of Allan Ollie Hunter ending as runner-up in the blue-ribbon Division One final.

Central Junior coach Jane said:“It was an excellent tournament with kids from Inverness to Houston battling it out and I would like to say a huge thanks to Allison Penman for organising the competition and to Graham’s Family Dairies for sponsorship.

“Well done to young Ollie Hunter for making it to the Division One final after having to battle through an epic semi-final which maybe took some of the firepower out of his game but congratulations to Sam Shannon on a fine performance in winning the final.

“The tournament has also given several of our juniors who will be competing at Nottingham this weekend a fantastic platform with Florence Gibson and Merryn Penman sure to benefit.

“We also have Ben Orr, Kyle Penman, Lucy Murchie and Anna Halliday all heading to Nottingham this weekend and I am sure they will do Central Scotland proud.”

Bridge of Allan junior squash co-ordinator Alison Penman was delighted with the quality of the squash and the enjoyment the Central Junior Open gave kids and parents alike.

Alison said:“From start to finish there were fantastic matches across the weekend. The Central is one of the few tournaments where the players are ranked by ability rather than age and gender so it’s a fab opportunity for girls and boys to compete against each other.

“It was just a joy to watch so many players from all over Scotland coming along and enjoying a great weekend of action with their parents cheering them on and great to see Minewood bouncing.”
