County leave it late to tame Bears in debut Super6 game

-

Stirling County head coach Ben Cairns was a happy man on Friday night after seeing his squad win their opening FOSROC

Super6 match against Boroughmuir Bears at Meggetland.

Two tries in the final few minutes by Caleb Korteweg and Oliver Bartlett, both converted by Josh Henderson gave County a 27-24 win.

“That win was what we wanted from this game, obviously,” he said afterwards.

“We made it tough for ourselves at times, but if you had said to me before the game that we would come away from home in the first ever game of Super6 rugby and get a win, we would have taken it regardless of the manner of it, so we are really happy.

“We felt like we were dominant in the first half as well, but costly errors, decisionmaking and discipline let us down a little bit. We spoke at half-time about keeping the ball for longer spells so that dominance would tell, and we got there in the end.

“We’ve put a lot of emphasis on our defence – getting the line-speed and physicality – and we saw that at the end, knocking them back from our 22 and leaving them having to kick 50-50 ball with the last play.”

County should take confidence from the win into their opening home match on Saturday when Southern Knights – who lost a close opener 14-13 at The Greenyards on

Saturday against Watsonians – are the visitors to Bridgehaugh.

It’s a double header for County fans with the Tennent’s National League Division 1 match between Stirling Wolves and Cartha Queen’s Park kicking off at 2pm to be followed at 4pm by the Super6 clash.
