Could your pooch take on a lead role?

- CHRIS MARZELLA

An appeal was this week issued for dogs with a theatrical bent to star in a top production.

It’s audition time again for Stirling’s longest running musical theatre company, Stirling and Bridge of Allan Operatic Society (SABOS), but this is no ordinary casting call.

Almost 50 local girls have already been cast as orphans in the society’s 2020 production of Annie, but there’s just one thing missing – a dog.

The hunt is now on to find the perfect canine to play Sandy, Annie’s four-legged companion, in the show which runs from March 21 until April 4.

Society president Carolyn Johnston said:“After casting our adult and child roles in autumn, our thoughts have now turned to our canine casting call. We are looking for two dogs to play the part of Sandy on alternate nights at the Macrobert. We’re not too fussy about breed, but they must be sandy-coloured to play the part and, of course, very obedient.

“Casting a dog is really quite like casting an actor, we’ll be looking for one with personality as well as the ability to get on well with our two Annies.”

The role of Annie will be performed by Grace Rocks and Hannah Gregory. Each dog will work with one of the girls, building up a rapport in the run up to show week.

Carolyn added:“If you think your dog has what it takes to perform on the big stage, then we want to hear from you. Drop us an email at sabosmusicaltheatre@gmail. com with a picture of your pet as well as details of their breed and temperament and we’ll be in touch. Auditions are expected to take place in January.”

Broadway hit musical Annie tells the story of an orphan in 1930s New York. Famous for the song Tomorrow, the show boasts an award-winning score brimming with toe-tapping tunes from It’s a Hard Knock Life and Little Girls to NYC and Maybe.

Tickets are available now from www. macrobertartscentre.org, priced from £12 for youth groups. For details of special group discounts email sabosmusicaltheatre@gmail. com.
