Signs to help walking and cycling safety

-

New vehicle activated signs (VAS) are to be installed on a Bridge of Allan street to improve safety for cyclists and walkers.

Stirling Council approved the electronic signs, which become visible when approaching motors are exceeding the speed limit on Airthrey Road.

The road forms part of one the‘Walk, Cycle, Live, Stirling’routes.

A Stirling Council spokesperson said:“As part of our commitment to improving road safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists on Airthrey Road, we are arranging to introduce two new vehicle activated signs to remind drivers of the revised speed limit.

“The road was reduced from a 40mph to a 30mph speed limit last year following a public consultation. Speeds have fallen as a result, however, some motorists have continued to drive at the previous limit without realising the change, which has led to us introducing the new VAS signs.”

Speeding along the route has been a regular topic for Bridge of Allan Community Council.

Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Tory councillor, Alastair Majury has been campaign to improve safety on the stretch for several years. He said:“In 2017 I was a lone objector to the reduction of the speed limit without any other measures, and only gave my consent on the basis that other measures such as a VAS were put in place, as I knew the measures would result in a minimal speed reduction.

“I have sadly been proven to be right, and I’m glad that there has now been cross-party acknowledgement of this. The installation of these signs are better late than never.”
