Praisefor Hogarth ondebut

-

Stirling Albion manager Kevin Rutkiewicz praised 18-year-old goalkeeper Nicky Hogarth for a confident performance on his SPFL debut.

The on-loan Rangers keeper showed up well in the 3-2 win away to Annan, with both Blair Currie and Cammy Binnie sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Rutkiewicz said: “I thought Nicky was excellent; he showed maturity and his kicking was good. I don’t think he was overly worked to be honest but he showed good hands and awareness coming to the edge of his box after a ball over the top a couple of times.

“He had one good save and took a corner under pressure and I don’t think he had any chance with the goals. The biggest thing for him is to build a trust with his defenders and I think he has shown he is more than capable.

“People will talk about Darryl Duffy’s fantastic finish or Dom Docherty’s goal but that was Nicky’s senior debut and he showed maturity beyond his years – there was good game management to slow things down once or twice. It’s a good start and hopefully he will grow from here.”

Doubles star Jamie Murray will start his 2020 Grand Slam tennis season later this week at the Australian Open.

It’s a tournament he won back in 2016 with Brazilian Bruno Soares – one of seven Grand Slam titles he has won with five in the mixed and two men’s championships.

Now partnering fellow Brit Neal Skupski, the 33 year-old warmed up for the Melbourne event by reaching the semi-final of the Adelaide International, losing to Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Filip Polasek (Slovakia).

At the Australian Open, Murray and Skupski are seeded No 14 and will meet Poland’s Hubert Hurkasz and Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in round one.
