Lull before blustery weather returns

-

There were not many signs of cold wintry weather last week, instead it was a week dominated at the weekend by Storm Ciara, writes Observer weatherman Scott Mclean.

Our third named storm of the winter brought yet more rainfall to an already soggy Stirling ground with its accompanying strong winds peaking at 48mph on Sunday, February 9.

There was some respite from the wind and rain around mid-week when we even had a few hours of winter sun but the short dry period was quickly over as Ciara approached.

The maximum temperature touched 10.8 Centigrade on Tuesday, February 4, with a low of -1.6 Centigrade on Friday, February 7. The maximum daily rainfall was 33mm on Saturday, February 8, with a weekly total of 56mm. Wind speeds reached 42mph on Tuesday, February 4.

After a wet and windy weekend it remained a similar start to the week but with a much colder and wintry feel with blustery showers. By midweek the strong winds will have eased although it will still remain breezy and it will turn drier for a time with only the occasional shower. Towards the end of the week and into the weekend we will likely see a mixture of sunshine and showers with the temperature remaining above freezing but we will still be affected by blustery and breezy conditions. As we begin next week we could see a return to more stormy weather.

The earliest sunrise will be 7.35am, with the latest sunset at 5.24pm.

Did You Know: This winter so far from December 1 to February 9 there has been a 137 per cent increase of rainfall over the same period last winter. 484mm so far this winter, that’s already nearly two and a half times more than last year.
