University skipper signs for Elgin City

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Stirling University skipper Angus Mailer has penned a contract with Scottish League Two side Elgin City.

The former St Johnstone youth player, will make the move to Borough Briggs next season on a one-year deal.

Mailer (21) has been playing his football with the Lowland League side for the past couple of seasons.

Elgin boss Gavin Price (seen here with Angus) had scouted the defender on numerous occasions before swooping to get his signature.

Mailer said:“The Elgin gaffer came and watched a few of our games and called me after making me an offer.

“The fact ex-student Rory MacEwan has done so well since signing for them also played a big factor. It was an easy decision.

Mailer has previous experience with Forfaric and always hoped to get back into the professional ranks but he never put added pressure on himself, saying:“I always just focused on each game as it came.

“Obviously I always had that thought in the back of my mind and that I would always relish the opportunity to try and play in the SPFL.

“Elgin are pushing for a play-off spot so I know I’m going to be going into a team which has a balance of experience and youth, and is full of energy.

“It’s going to be a step up for me so I just have to work as hard as I can and you never know.”

As well as playing in the Lowland League, Stirling University have also been competing in the BUCS Premier North.

And last week they were crowned champions following a dramatic late victory against Nottingham Trent University.

Mailer has played a big part in both the Lowland League and university campaign, clocking up hundreds of miles along the way.

He added:“The standard in the Lowland League has got a lot better and we’ve been competing against some of the bigger teams and coming away with a lot of points which is very promising for a young bunch of players.

“Winning the BUCS League was also a great achievement - the boys sacrifice a lot of time to travel to these games.”

Elgin manager Price is looking forward to Mailer’s arrival.

“Angus can play a number of positions and has an excellent attitude to the game,”he noted.

“I am confident he will be a great addition to our squad next season.”

Minewood’s queen of the court Sabine Mackenzie led the way with her fifth consecutive ladies title at over-35 level while Andy Meldrum retained his over-50 gents title after recently claiming the East of Scotland Masters’ title in the same age group.

Club champion Roddy Campbell claimed the men’s over-45 title however perhaps the most noticeable victory was the blue-ribbon title triumph in the elite gents over-35 class for returning old home boy Callum Reid.

Callum, who dispatched Glasgow Western’s Paul Cousins in three entertaining sets, admitted his triumph on the home boards of his youth in front of a noisy friends and family support was a moment to savour.

The Central Scotland over-35 Masters champion said: “It was a real trip down memory lane to return to Minewood and meet up with so many old faces and of course enjoy the support of my dad John, mum Jill and my sister.

“So, it meant an awful lot to me to come through the draw and beat a quality player like Paul Cousins in the final. It was certainly worth the trip up from London and I’m really looking forward to coming back next year and defending the title.

“It is my first Scottish Masters Series title and the fact it is the Central is played at my home club will always make it really special and memorable.”

Five-time winner Sabine Mackenzie said: “I think what was really good was that all four
