Veteran Ron lands a Masters silver medal

-

Central AC veteran Ron Todd dug deep to secure a silver meal at the recent Scottish Indoor Combined Events Championships in Glasgow.

Competing in the Masters event where age gradings are used and performances adjusted according to the athlete’s age, Ron opened with 8.64m in the 60m, 4.41m at long jump, 10.16m at shot and 3.07m at pole vault to give him the overrnight lead on an age adjusted score of 2539 points.

On day two he continued strongly with 10.54m at 60m hurdles then rolled back the years with an excellent high jump of 1.51m, his best jump for many seasons.

This gave him the lead going into the final 1000m event but he knew he was up against it as endurance isn’t his strongest area. Ron, however, fought hard to finish in 4:28.45 but this wasn’t enough to hold on to the lead and he had to settle for silver and a score of 4245 points.

At under 20 level, Erik Escala competed for Scotland in November at the schools’ pentathlon international. Only 17, the Dunblane teenager knew the competition finish on a good score.

He opened well with a personal best 7.48s in the 60m then performed consistently for the rest of the day as he came close to his pb in the long jump with 5.90m and shot putt with 11.77m then high jump with 1.77m to place him fourth overnight on 2480 points.

A strong hurdles of 9.07m maintained his position then he soared to a pb in the pole vault with 3.57m.

He finished his weekend with a 1000m run of 3:15.18 to score a l best of 4234 points and fourth place outright.

Jack Campbell was competing in his first ever heptathlon in the under 17s and finished the first day with a complete set of personal bests as he sprinted to 8.30s in the 60m, long jumped 5.16m, threw the shot 7.86m then high jumped 1.47m for a first day score of 1614 points.

He then continued this with a pb 10.38s in the 60m hurdles then cleared 2.37m in his first ever pole vault and finished with 3:08.32 in his debut 1000m.

This gave him a final score of 2884 points and a respectable seventh place.
