Focus on the Scots tongue at Macrobert
Stirling’s Macrobert Arts Centre is presenting a programme of events involving the Scots dialect.
The team at the Macrobert presents a themed programme of film screenings, live events and workshops that together, encourage people from across Stirling and Forth Valley to get involved in a themed ‘Conversation’ this spring.
This season it is inspired by the ‘braw new musical’ Oor Wullie, which takes place from Wednesday February 26 to Saturday February 29.
It is called ‘Yer Ain Voice’ and explores the different sayings, slang words and dialects people use and the role they play in the world they live in.
Fans of big screen entertainment will also get the chance to enjoy three classics of Scottish cinema again,
Starting with Peter Mullan’s NEDS (Sunday, Febuary 23 at 7.45pm), animation Brave (Saturday, February 29 and Sunday, March 1 at 11am), the family favourite featuring the vocal talents of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly and Kevin McKidd, is up next before Ken Loach’s awardwinning The Angels’ Share (Tuesday, March 3, 7.45pm).
Legendary Scottish poet and playwright Liz Lochhead is also joining the ‘Conversation’, entertaining audiences with the story of how she learned to stop worrying and love the Scots language in Scottish Strangewords (Thursday March 26, 7.30pm) – there will also be a Q&A.
And award-winning musical duo Hannah Rarity and Luc McNally will be providing a varied programme of Scottish, Irish, English and American songs at a “Relaxed” event (Tuesday April 28 at 2pm).
Macrobert’s Relaxed afternoon events are open to everyone, but have been developed in consultation with people with dementia and their companions/loved ones.
Rounding off Macrobert’s spring Conversation is an exhibition from GOSSIP Collective, an artist run collective formed in August 2017 that is committed to developing the contemporary arts scene within the heart of Scotland.
Their exhibition, also called ‘Yer Ain Voice’ (running from February 19-April12), is an engaging look at contemporary artists’ creative interpretations on the theme of Scots dialect and identity.
Tickets for all the films and events on offer as part of ‘Yer Ain Voice’ are available from macrobertartscentre. org or by calling 01786 466 666.
The exhibition is open for viewing from 10am daily in the Arthouse at Macrobert Arts Centre.
