S3 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

The S3 Geography class recently went on a field trip to Ingleborough Cave in the Yorkshire Dales. Pupils were able to put their learning into practice when they went inside the limestone caves to look at features created by the underground river, over thousands of years. The trip was a huge success and pupils were a credit to the school.

TINY HOUSE

The tiny-house movement is a social movement that advocates living simply. The movement promotes financial prudence and shared community experiences. The senior construction class at St Modan’s have been learning a variety of construction skills and techniques to design and build their own tiny house whilst learning about offsite construction.

The whole class have been involved in the planning of the course. They’ve worked with their teacher to agree the sequence of lessons to suit the build. Working together to solve problems as and when they arose and the outcomes are amazing.

Empowered with this level of responsibility, the young people have come up with great ideas to design and build their tiny house whilst demonstrating real authority in leading class discussions. All of the young people have found an area within the build that they feel confident in leading when they work in small teams.

The tiny house has been re-designed, re-built and refined along the way and it is believed that the young people have acquired a deeper knowledge through active exploration of this challenge.

Together they have been able to solve real problems in their school in a practical way. The project offers numerous benefits including a broad knowledge base, improved communication and interpersonal/social skills, enhanced leadership skills and increased creativity. The promise of their hard work progressing the build becomes the motivation for learning.

CHARITY FUNDRAISER

Keira Sharpe (S2) recently donated her hair to The Little Princess Trust in order to raise funds for this amazing charity. Keira made the decision to donate her hair based on a young family member losing all of her hair to cancer.
