Shoot-out misery for Bannockburn

(Uddingston won 4-2 on penalties)

Bannockburn went out of the M&M Cup at Uddingston on afternoon that saw all four seasons in one day,

The wild winter weather shouldn’t have halted Burn, though, as they squandered a three-goal half-time lead to go out on penalties.

Playing with the wind at their backs, Bannockburn managed some nice interplaying moves. Ryan Weir had the first chance at the back post before a passage of swift play saw Chris Ogilvie run past his defender, strike a low cross for Steven Knox to slot home at the back post.

Uddingston, while not deadly, had a couple of headed opportunities before Weir made it two after slipping his marker. Two minutes later, Weir made it 3-0 to give the visitors a comfortable half-time lead.

Manager Campbell’s team talk at the break warned of the dangers and exhorted his troops to a tight defence and he was proved right with less than 10 minutes played as a combination of circumstances allowed Anvil to pull one back.

Then another error gave visitors a second before the hour.

Weir almost broke through on goal with the defender’s tackle sbringing a yellow when it could have been red before Ogilvie chipped the goalie for a fourth.

Keeper Adam Young conceded a penalty which the home side converted and the home side equalised in the closing minutes.

The game went straight to penalties which Uddingston won 4-2.

Bannockburn would like to thank Morton and Sullivan for their generous sponsorship.

Next game on Saturday is a league match away to St Patrick’s FP in Dumbarton.
