Stirling University are due to kick-off their British Universities and Colleges Cup campaign today (Wednesday) when the University of South Wales visits the Gannochy for a quarter-final tie.

The Stirling students go into the match having slipped to a 2-0 Lowland League defeat to Cumbernauld Colts on Saturday.

The match beat the wet weather thanks to the artificial pitch at Broadwood and it was the home side who benefited thanks to first half goals from Billy Mortimer and Michael Cunningham.

Midfielder Craig Brown missed a penalty in the closing stages of the match and Jamie Penker squandered a couple of opportunites which may have given the students the win.

Manager Chris Geddes said: “Cumbernauld were really good in the first half, scored two really good goals, but we just couldn’t get anything going. We were so sloppy, giving the ball away.

“The wind did play a part but I can’t use that as an excuse – we just weren’t good enough.

“We were better in the second half. We’ve had four good chances – Jamie Penker had two and he should score one of them, at least.

“We’ve missed the penalty and we missed a header from six yards. It’s been a bit of an Achilles heel all season for us and it showed.”

On Saturday, the students are back at Forthbank when Gretna 2008 are the visitors in a Lowland League match.
