MCLAREN HIGH
JUPITER ARTLAND
This week McLaren pupils visited Jupiter Artland, described as a “Joyous Museum of Contemporary Sculpture” which showcases creative works by emerging and established artists spread across a 100-acre meadow and five indoor gallery spaces.
Pupils and staff had the opportunity to view sculptures from artists including Charles Jencks and Cornelia Parker and viewed Pablo Bronstein’s ‘The Rose Walk’.
The group would like to thank tour guide Matt who did a fantastic job of helping them find their creative side and spark their imaginations.
IET FIRST LEGO
On Saturday, February 29, McLaren High’s STEM pupils travelled to Perth College to attend the IET FIRST LEGO League Final 2020. The afternoon began with various presentations regarding core values in terms of engineering, and included some excellent talks in light of the competition and ‘Building Tomorrow Today’.
This also included a demonstration of the pupils’ Robot Table. All three McLaren teams deserve a congratulating for all reaching the top six and making it to the quarter finals, picking up five trophies on the day with two teams qualifying for the International tournaments.
SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE
Pupils recently visited the Macrobert Arts Centre at Stirling University to take part in the Safe Drive Stay Alive event. This year marks its 15th anniversary and it has welcomed more than 240,000 visitors since 2006.
On average around 2000 pupils pass their driving test throughout the UK and as many as one in five are involved in an accident within their first year of driving. Safe Drive Stay Alive make it their mission to address many common issues seen with young drivers and brings awareness to road safety and helps promote positive behaviours and attitudes on the roads.
McLaren pupils have benefited from the event and feel that it has brought them a whole new understanding of road safety procedures.
BREAKING THE STIGMA
Throughout February, McLaren High pupils have participated in various events in relation to Breaking the Stigma as part of Children’s Mental Health Week. During registration pupils were given coloured paper and were asked to draw an outline of their hands where they should write their names and positive words.
Pupils were also asked to come up with a ‘mental health quote’, with the best being displayed in classes and points awarded to their house.
Thanks to Harriet Holden, Flora Duff, Tommy Scott and the rest of the mental health group for their efforts in organising the events.
Following the mental health day the school welcomed Phillip Mitchel from the Chris Mitchell Foundation. Workshops took place to explain about the chemical makeup of our brain and ways to help/improve mental health. Thanks go to Phillip and the foundation for their fantastic presentation.
MCLAREN HIGH ROBOTICS
Recently, the McLaren High robotics team participated in the Young Engineers and Science Club competition which was held at Larbert High School. Finishing in first place and collecting three winners’ trophies, the team rose to the challenge and performed to a high standard. The McLaren team will compete alongside Lornshill Academy in the final which will be held in Birmingham later this month.
