Praise for binmen as critics are silenced

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

Council binmen are being praised for their role in trying to keep waste down amid the coronavirus crisis.

People have even been leaving thank you notes for the waste operatives as they go on their daily rounds.

Others have taken to social media to show their apprecation – and defend them against comments from some who have complained about the service being limited or some bins being missed during the lockdown.

Sharon De La Guerre told one:“Maybe they would also like to be home safe with their families. Just be grateful!”

While Kate Fleming said: “All essential services are doing there best. If you are out doing essential services good on you, if not, please be grateful for what they are managing to do.”

Ann Williamson said: “They’re doing the best they can under very difficult circumstances.”

And Margaret Taylor added: “Give the guys a break, they’re risking their lives to try and empty your bins.”

Jennifer Brown was impressed with some of the measures being taken in a bid to keep the waste service workers as safe as possible.

She said:“I saw a bin lorry from my flat and noticed a smart car with a worker in it going round with the lorry then jumping out to gather up the bins. What a fantastic way to help keep workers safe and distancing from each other. Thank you.”

“I really appreciate all their hard work,”said Sam Thomson.

“They are doing a great job and the guys who do my area are always cheery. Stay safe.”

Bin collections across

Stirling have been reduced, with blue, brown and glass bins affected and available staff resources shifted to focus on priority collections. All food and garden waste are to be placed in the grey bin meantime.

Glass box collections are also suspended and should be retained at home for future recycling or, where this is not possible, placed within the grey bin.

Blue bins (plastics and cans) will now be collected once every four weeks and collection weeks are temporarily changing.

Grey bins will continue to be collected as normal (every two weeks) on scheduled collection days and green bins are being collected as normal (every four weeks) on scheduled days.

The new temporary timetable is listed as follows: w/c April 6 green bins only; w/c April 13 grey bins only; w/c April 20 blue bins only.

All Stirling Council tips and the special uplift service are also closed until further notice.
