Virus kills 447 Scots

-

A total of 27 people have been confirmed to have died in the Forth Valley region as a result of the Covid 19 outbreak.

The first report from the National Records of Scotland released on Tuesday revealed the figure from an overall total of 354 deaths as of Sunday.

The data goes beyond the daily figures reporting the number of deaths from those who had tested positive for the virus, outlining the number of all deaths reported where Covid 19 has been mentioned on the death certificate.

This means it is likely to be a more accurate picture of the true situation across Scotland.

The Forth Valley is the joint fourth highest in Scotland, with only the Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lothian and Lanarkshire areas reporting more fatalities, with Ayrshire and Arran on the same figure.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s figures of those with confirmed cases revealed that 4,957 people are registered as battling the virus in Scotland currently, with 1,781 in hospital with Covid 19.

The numbers in intensive care units with coronavirus symptoms was up by ten to a total of 212.

Thursday’s announcement also saw a sharp spike in those passing away from the virus, with a further 81 deaths confirmed, taking the Scotland-wide figure to 447.

In Forth Valley, there were 259 confirmed cases of the virus on Wednesday, with 107 people in hospital and nine in intensive care with the virus.

Across the UK, the latest data at going to press showed that 60,733 had tested positive for Covid 19, with 7,097 deaths.

Speaking yesterday, the First Minister urged people not to venture out this Easter but instead to follow the rules and stay home.

She said she accepted this would be hard, especially for families and older people, but encouraged people to stay in touch in alternative ways.

She added:“Please do follow the rules and stay at home over Easter.”

Nicola Sturgeon also admitted, during questioning, that health care staff have expressed concerns about the adequacy of PPE supplies, its distribution to where it is needed, the guidance the government are issuing and the quality but stressed that it had been working hard to resolve the issues.

She stressed that there were adequate supplies of protective equipment and“despite global pressures”, glitches in its distribution were being addressed.
