Central duoget London chance

-

Central Athletic Club athletes are having to find new and innovative ways of keeping fit during the current lockdown but two of the club’s Under-15s have been given a great incentive to keep training throughout the summer.

With much of the planned summer season already cancelled or postponed, the London Marathon and London Mini Marathon have currently been rescheduled to October 4 and Connor Bell and Cameron Kerr have been selected to compete for Scotland in the prestigious London Mini Marathon.

As with much in these uncertain times the final details require to be confirmed but it looks as though the pair could be following in the footsteps of other local runners who have competed in the past and progressed to greater achievements including Andrew Butchart, Jamie Crowe, Alastair Hay and Morag Millar.

The London Mini Marathon three-mile races double as the British Championships and includes teams from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, nine English regions and 33 London Boroughs so a great opportunity for both Connor and

Cameron for some top-class competition.

Stirling University golf star Hazel MacGarvie will take on some of the world’s best amateur golfers later this year after being selected to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup.

The third-year student will represent an International side, containing players from more than 15 countries, against their American counterparts at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Florida, on December 21-23.

The match is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men’s and women’s university/college golfers from across the world and has seen more than 100 former players go on to earn cards on either the PGA, European or LPGA Tours.

The event was originally due to be hosted at Lahinch Golf Club in July but has been postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Lahinch will now host in 2024.

Troon native Hazel, who won her first senior international title at St Andrews last year, said:“I’m absolutely delighted with my selection. It feels great and is some good news amid these difficult times.

“The university has been a great help in me getting to where I am. The training programme that Dean (Robertson – University of Stirling High Performance Golf Coach) has put together is a fantastic support for all of us and continues to produce great results.”

The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in 1997.

The event has been played at some of the world’s greatest courses and in 2018, became the only major tournament to feature men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
