Summer pedals for hospice cash

-

A P2 pupil at Bannockburn Primary School is using pedal power to raise funds for Strathcarron Hospice during the current lockdown.

Summer Hope was inspired by NHS hero Captain Tom Moore and fitness guru Joe Wicks.

After seeing them on TV the six-year-old asked if she could raise money by riding her bike, doing 100 laps of the family farm over a number of days - with one lap measuring 380 metres.

By the end of her challenge she will have cycled 38,000 metres.

On Wednesday she had already raised £790 - far exceeding her initial target of £150.

The coronavirus outbreak has meant that all of Strathcarron Hospice’s main upcoming fundraising events have had to be cancelled.

They don’t receive any local authority funding and the hospice costs £12,900 per day to run.

Meanwhile, the hospice celebrated its 39th birthday on Tuesday, marking the day it opened its doors to its first patients.

Fundraising manager Jackie Johnston said:“The purchase of the hospice house was made possible thanks to the support of the local community who fundraised and donated to bring our vision of a hospice to fruition.

“To celebrate our special birthday, staff and customers of Sainsbury’s in Denny have paid for all of our services after raising an incredible £16,461. We may be unable to celebrate with them in person due to the current crisis, but that doesn’t stop us from feeling incredibly humbled and grateful for their support. Here’s to the next 39.”

Donations to the Strathcarron can also be made by texting‘Strathcarron £20’to 70085 to provide. The sum provides one hour of nursing care.
