Safe distance complaints over cyclists

-

There have been calls for clarity over rules regarding cycling during the coronavirus lockdown.

Stirling SNP MSP Bruce Crawford has raised the issue of social distancing for cyclists during the restrictions with the Scottish Government.

Mr Crawford, a cyclist himself, has campaigned to promote the uptake of cycling in the Stirling area in recent years. However, whilst lockdown restrictions have been in place, a number of constituents have been in touch with complaints about the behaviour of some cyclists – either using the pavements or not keeping a safe two-metre distance.

Mr Crawford has raised the matter with Police Scotland’s Area Commander for Stirling, and has submitted questions to the Scottish Government, calling for advice on the matter.

Mr Crawford said:“The last thing I want to happen is for people who have taken up cycling as a routine form of exercise to stop doing so. Not only is a hugely rewarding activity, but it has incredible health benefits attached to it – so please get on your bike and enjoy the weather.

“However, this must be done safely. I am concerned about the number of complaints that I’ve received regarding people recklessly cycling on pavements or not maintaining a safe two-metre distance.

“Daily exercise – particularly as we’re getting into the warmer weather – is incredibly important to people. This must be a safe for everyone, which is why I’ve raised the matter with Police Scotland and have put parliamentary questions to the Scottish Government for further clarity on any advice and guidance on this matter.”
