Future stars in action at university five-a-side tournament

Stirling Observer reader Allan Gillies sent in this photo of the finalists at a five-a-side tournament from 1989.

Allan coached Denny FC to victory over Bridge of Allan Primary School in the final of the Nike Intersport 5-a-side Under 12s football tournament at Stirling University with Denny emerging as 4-0 winners.

He has named all the Denny players who are standing - left to right Neil Thomson, Johnny Boyack, Martyn Corrigan, Peter Lyon, Danny Smith, Kevin Fitzimmons, David Reid. In the Bridge of Allan team kneeling, he has managed to name a couple - left to right ?, ?, ?, Hugh McNeilage, Richard Robertson, ?.

Allan is pictured standing right. he was at the time Stirling District Council Libraries Manager and beside him is Mike Donnelly, Stirling University lecturer and former Stirling District Council leader. The other three adults are unknown to Allan.

He says: “Johnny Boyack was selected as player of the tournament and was presented with a signed match ball by Terry Butcher. Johnny then went on to become a club stalwart with Shotts Bon Accord, following spells at Dunipace and Linlithgow Juniors. He signed for Shotts in 2001 and played there for 12 years, making 364 appearance­s, scoring 85 goals, mainly from midfield, and also served as club captain.

“Martyn Corrigan went on to carve out a successful profession­al football career, commencing by spending five years at local club Falkirk, before spending eight seasons with Motherwell and amassing 243 appearance­s. Martyn also turned out for Kilmarnock,

Ross County, Partick Thistle, Stirling Albion and Stenhousem­uir as well as playing for a season early on in his career with Jokerit in Finland where he won the Finnish Cup.

“When he finished playing Martyn had a spell as manager of Stenhousem­uir and also as assistant manager and caretaker manager of Stirling Albion. One of the highlights of his career was being selected to play in two Scotland Future Squads against Germany and Turkey and he was honoured to be chosen as captain in the latter match.

“Danny Smith (like his dad Danny) signed for Dunipace

Juniors and then Linlithgow Rose and played there for a remarkable period of 12 years, winning a superb hattrick of Scottish Cups as well as two Super Leagues and various other pieces of silverware. He then went on to manage Kilsyth, Camelon and Linlithgow Juniors.”
