‘Seeds of joy in our sunflower project’

Group is busy keeping village spirits up

-

Villagers in Cowie are continuing to keep spirits up as lockdown is extended.

Cowie Rural Action Group (CRAG) is keeping up its effort to ‘Keep Cowie Smiling’, being hailed as heroes by the community. Grahame Slater, chairman of Cowie United FC, provided and delivered 200 sunflowers kits to all youngsters who asked to take part in the CRAG ‘Do you want to Grow a Sunflower’ competition.

He said: “Cowie United are at the heart of the community and work hand-in-hand with CRAG with most of the volunteers belonging to both community groups. It’s great to see us both work together to build strong bonds between the football club and the Action group in serving the community.”

The sunflowers have been a great success and the photos of the journey from seed to plant is keeping youngsters amused.

As a thank you to all those who are taking part, CRAG delivered 200 bags full of fun games and activities to the youngsters of the village and, not to be left out, the CRAG logo bags were filled with cleaning goods for the 70 elderly in the village who

CRAG are supporting daily with meals.

Clare Stevenson, from CRAG, said “The past eight weeks have seen us provide daily meals in excess of 2800 to our elderly in the village, we have provided grocery and butcher packs to over 200 homes, delivered 300 Easter eggs, 200 sunflower packs, more than 270 CRAG bags, 520 ready meals, and we have planning in place to continue for next three weeks, this has all been possible thanks to the hard work and commitment of the dedicated team – Jane Hamill, Graham Slater, Louise Bishop, Gael Strachan and Maria Cooper – without the support of these guys working tirelessly to support CRAG and myself we could not achieve so much.

“Funding is a huge part of covering the costs of providing the services we have given for free and a huge heart felt thanks to Foundation Scotland who awarded CRAG a grant of £5000 to make this possible. The continued support of Bella’s Takeaway, donations from the community, Cowie Bowling Club, Morrisons supermarket and so many more who have helped us ‘Keep Cowie Smiling’.”
