Go home message as beauty spots are mobbed

- CHRIS MARZELLA

New laws could be introduced to punish those flouting lockdown rules by flocking to a number of Stirling and Loch Lomond beauty spots.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last week eased lockdown restrictions as the country entered phase 1 of the governments “route map” out of lockdown.

As a result, people are allowed to sunbathe and meet others outside while social distancing but people are being asked to travel no more than five miles to do so.

However, with temperatures soaring across Scotland at the weekend, Callander, Balmaha, Falls of Falloch and in Stirling, were inundated with visitors.

Beauty spots were trashed, with piles of rubbish and “toilet mess” left behind, scores of cars parked in rural spots with National park chief executive, Gordon Watson hitting out.

Speaking about crowds of visitors at her press conference on Monday, the First Minister said: “Overall, transport was 70 percent up from the previous Sunday, and transport on Saturday was 60 percent up on the week before.

“In some places, Loch Lomond and Glencoe, for example, the increase was even more dramatic than that.

“On Saturday, on the A82 by Loch Lomond, traffic was around three times higher than it was the previous Saturday.”

She warned that restrictions could be reimposed or guidance could become law if people continue to go against the advice.
