A big-hearted Tullibody youngster has gone the extra mile to show his support for healthcare heroes fighting the pandemic.

Twelve-year-old Lewis Swan has been using his time during lockdown to pull on the running shoes and hit the streets around his area, as well as enthusiastically showing his support for the NHS by taking part in the ‘Clap for Carers’ every Thursday night.

It led Lewis, who is about to move into his second year at Lornshill Academy, to come up with the challenge of running 15 kilometres on a route from his home to Stirling and around the city to raise money for NHS Charities Together earlier this month.

Lewis’ proud dad Mark told the Observer: “He’s been out applauding the key workers every Thursday and even pulled other family members

up when he visited and they weren’t doing it.

“He started off just doing one and two kilometres here and there and then he came one day and said he wanted to run 15 kilometres for the NHS, so he trained a few days a week and I would follow him on the bike.

“He set a date of June 5, which didn’t give him much time to get sponsorship set up, but he got an online giving page and a lot of people have supported him.

“He realised when he could run a bit of distance that he wanted to do something for the key workers helping with Covid to make a contribution.

After setting an initial target of £100, Lewis’ appeal has smashed through the £500 barrier, with a few days still to go.

Mark added: “I’m very proud of him because he never would have earned that money sitting on the computer even though he’s a bit of a pest at times, he is a kind-hearted and giving boy that does think of other people.

“The money has just kept coming in from family and friends and he keeps moving the date and increasing the target but the final closing date is in a few days.

“I think he’s going to stick with the running now and I do a bit of cycling and climb a few munros, so I’m hopeful that he might come along one day.”
