Council’s disgusting bin plan needs to be trashed
Dear Editor I was appalled to learn in your edition of June 26 that Stirling Council is proposing monthly bin collections.
A two-week collection is bad enough but it is a disgraceful proposal that residents of the Stirling Council area are to be subjected to festering bins where soiled nappies, pet waste and other noxious items are to lie for a whole month before the excrement is collected.
The proposal is simply disgusting in the 21st century and I sincerely hope our elected councillors of all political persuasions, our MSP and MP will speak out immediately against this proposal to ensure it is promptly thrown out. Where will it all end - a return to medieval times with an open sewer down the middle of the road?
In addition there is a proposal to implement a £35 charge for the collection of garden waste on top of the recent Council Tax increase. For those who will not or cannot afford the charge or do not have the facility for home composting, it is suggested they take it to a recycling centre. People who cannot afford £35 are those most unlikely to have a car to visit the recycling centre which also adds to environmental pollution by many single trip car journeys, something the council should take into account and recognise that environmental factors go beyond their own door.
In their examination of waste disposal facilities, Stirling Council might be well advised to start looking at the waste services department and to getting better value for money and asking why they have the accolade of the most expensive waste collection in the country, according to Audit Scotland.
