Competition golf returned last weekend and although the weather was very mixed, gents enjoyed being back on Medal tees.

In Friday’s Senior Gents Nine Hole Stableford, only two hardy souls managed to play through the all-day heavy showers and Jim Black was rewarded with the first win of the 2020 season with his score of 16 points winning on a countback from Brian Paterson.

The first Monthly Medal was played on Saturday in tandem with the President’s Prize knockout qualifying. The weather gods shone and players completed their rounds dry which was a bonus.

The cut off score for the President’s Prize was net 68 and the draw for the 16 qualifiers has been posted on the noticeboard and emailed to competitors.

Simon Lyall made up for his disappointment in finishing second on Saturday by continuing his good form and winning the Gents Nine Hole Sunday Stableford with 21 points. 67 and BIH than Stewart Sheridan (16) .

The Third Class was won by John Cleghorn (21) on 63, including a birdie at the 7th. Runner up was Ian Docherty (18) on 67 and BIH than Peter Gittins (23). The 16 net scores of 69 and best last six (BL6) qualified for the match play stages of the Captain’s Prize.

The first counting competition was a Yellow Medal Stableford on Wednesday when some good scores were returned.

Three players returned 40 points in the First Class but the winner was Gordon Pringle (5) with a better last two (BL2) than Alistair MacRae (5) who had BL2 than Kenny Gibson (10). Fourth place went to Gary McIntyre (8) on 39 points.

On March 29, 2006 Stirling Golf Club re-enacted a match from March 29, 1506 when King James IV played against the Earl of Bothwell.
Five hundred years before, the Lord High Treasurer bought 12 golf balls in Stirling when the court was resident there, and it is a reasonable assumption that James played on that day over his King’s Park hence the re-enactmemt of the match.
