A place we can now call home

Dunblane Cricket Club’s efforts to raise £5,000 for an artificial pitch have been successful.

The fledgling club set up a crowdfunding page on June 7 and passed the £5,000 on Sunday – with an amazing £5,475 in just over four weeks.

Among those who sent messages of support were former England captain David Gower, ex-Test star Mark Butcher, Cricket Scotland president Sue Strachan, clubs up and down the country as well as lots of other well-wishers.

Until now youngsters at Dunblane have practiced indoors and outdoors and last summer they played in some Kwik Cricket festivals around Forth Valley.

But a decision was made to try and raise money to create their own outside wicket. Crowdfunding was due to start just after Easter but it was decided to postpone it because of the current conditions.

Secretary Alan Robertson said:“Our nervousness regarding starting was unfounded as after three days we had already raised 25 per cent of our £5,000 target.

“We have been overwhelmed with the donations that have come from all over the UK and overseas. Our decision to progress the crowdfunding while in lockdown was a concern but has actually been viewed positively by the public. We would like to thank everyone that donated.”

A message on the club’s crowdfunding page said:“Because you didn’t just wish it would happen, but made it happen, you have helped establish a cricket club. That’s not something many people get the opportunity to lay claim to these days!

“Even better is that this club will focus on junior cricket and parity in participation between girls and boys.

“Knowing the Dunblane spirit, being the baby of Scottish cricket will not hold back our ambition. So, I hope you all keep an eye on our progress. We will certainly make sure we keep you up to date!”

Alan told the Observer last month that the club had been discussing with local councillors where they could play with Dunblane High School playing fields and Laighhills being the front runners.

More meetings are planned to have the pitch delivered as early as possible.

The club is looking for more coaching volunteers. Anyone interested can contact Alan on 07584 066756.
