With the threat of war with Germany growing, Stirlingsh­ire Education Committee met in July 1939 to put in place measures required in the event of an emergency.

Teachers were told they would have to show `initiative resource and adaptabili­ty’ to cope with an expected influx of children evacuated from the towns and cities likely to be targeted in a war.

Officials said buildings would have to be identified for use as meeting points and billets for evacuees and a `double shift’ system would be used in school to absorb the incoming children. It was hoped the latter set-up would enable both `native and
