Looking back at how far we have come in four months

-

As August comes quickly around the corner, we are beginning to get a clearer idea of what our post-covid “new normal” will be.

Looking back over this year, it would have been hard to imagine in those difficult months that we would be in the position we are now in.

I am sure there isn’t one family that hasn’t been impacted in some way by this virus and my thoughts are with those who have lost a loved one or who continue to feel its effects.

But through the resilience and dedication of those living across Scotland, taking preventative public health measures seriously, we are on our way to eliminating coronavirus. Community transmission is low and the public health teams doing test and trace are doing a brilliant job at suppressing the virus.

Gradually and carefully, the economy is opening back up. Local businesses, having taken appropriate steps, can start to welcome customers back.

“Non-essential” shops have recently opened, we can now head back to cafes, pubs and restaurants in limited numbers with caution and I am sure I am not the only one who has taken advantage of barbers reopening.

As we move through the lockdown phases, it is down to us all to support local businesses and the local economy where we can

Both have struggled over the past few months and will be crucial to our wider recovery.

Remember to treat workers with respect and continue to wear a mask inside shops.

I know that for many the most difficult part of the lockdown measures has been the separation from friends and family

The recent announcement that shielding is to be paused from August 1 is extremely welcome news, meaning those who have been shielding can now meet eight others from two households indoors, 15 outside and also visit shops.

The creation of airbridges with other countries means that those who had previously booked holidays can head away or visit family, although staycations are currently most advisable.

The recent case of Spain illustrates just how quickly official guidance can change, and now would be a great time to support local tourism.

The careful approach we have taken, led by the science, has meant that we are in the position of being able to gradually re-open our society and economy, restoring a semblance of normality. But as recent fluctuations in the number of cases suggest, we must remain vigilant and follow public health measures.

While it may be tempting, we cannot let our guard down.

Social distancing, wearing masks and good hygiene is just as important now as we look to move through lockdown.

Every day, we make further progress towards beating this virus.

We must all play our part– remember FACTS and self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.

August would have seen the 169th Bridge of Allan Highland Games, always an incredible day and a sad reminder of all we continue to miss out on.

I look forward to a bumper celebration next year.

You may be tempted but don’t let your guard down
