‘Floods one of the worst seen’ Heavy rain causes major disruption

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Torrential rain caused localised flooding at a number of locations across Stirling and the Hillfoots, forcing homeowners to evacuate.

Heavy rain throughout much of Tuesday caused a number of routes becoming waterlogged and road closures.

Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Stirling Council and Clackmannanshire Council worked in conjunction to tackle on a number of flooding issues across the areas.

In Clacks, there was significant flooding in Tillicoultry as the Upper Mill Street, Lower Mill Street, Hareburn Road and Park Street areas saw a deluge.

The A91 was closed through the town.

Tillicoultry, Devonside and Coalsnaughton Flood Group volunteers were called out mid-afternoon when it looked likely that the Tilly burn would cause flooding problems to properties. The group took to social media to say: “Flooding was managed by an onsite team of volunteers and Clacks Council staff until 7pm. The burn then surged, burst its banks and inundated local streets, homes and businesses. Emergency services were called to help evacuate folks from their homes and get them

Pic by Ross Macdonald to somewhere safe and dry. Tideco would like to thank all those involved in supporting the community on Tuesday during a harrowing event.

“This is one of the worst floods we have witnessed for some time. Our thoughts are with those affected by yesterday’s events. We’ll be working with Clacks Council and the Scottish Flood Forum to see how we can best respond and support.”

Aberfoyle also saw some flooding, with a number of roads in the village submerged. Ross Macdonald,

•Skills Development Scotland have launched their annual exam results helpline for people who have received their results but are unsure about what to do now.

Thousands of pupils received their exam results through the post or by text. However, some may have not received the results they were hoping for. The SDS helpline is available to discuss what options are open to people in this situation.

Motorists travelling between Milngavie and Balfron also reported delays on the roads after the road at Glengoyne was closed, Drymen Bridge was impassable, and the bridge over the River Endrick at Killearn steadings was also impassable.

Roads through Drymen also proved tricky.

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park had to close a campsite as a result of flooding. A spokesperson took to social media to say: “Camping at our campsite at Loch Achray and permit area L on the Three Lochs Forest Drive will be closed tonight (Wednesday) and Thursday due to flooding. Campers booked into these sites have been contacted. We’re hopeful they will reopen for the weekend.”

Ochils Mountain Rescue Team took to social media following Tuesday’s downpour after being made aware of a number of hazards in the area.

They said: “Due to our local geography we have some very technical gorges in the Ochils which can become hazardous after heavy rain.

“The photo below shows the damage to the path up Mill Glen last night, we would expect that the likes of Dollar and Alva Glen may also be affected as well as other paths in the local area.

“If you are venturing out as the weather gets better please follow the warning signs, if the path you want to use is closed choose another and stay safe.

“For anyone who uses these areas for canyoning it would be advisable to check out the condition of the gorge before your next trip.”
