Fancy a TV dinner? Get another taste of Corner Shop Cook-off contest
Viewers of BBC Scotland have been revisiting Gargunnock after the corner shop was featured in one of the channel’s shows.
In Corner Shop Cook-off resident chef Gary Maclean goes head to head with a guest chef each week as they race to come up with a meal using items from small independent shops in communities across Scotland.
Earlier this year the west Stirlingshire village of Gargunnock was in the spotlight for the programme, which is hosted by Altered Images singer and Gregory’s Girl actress Clare Grogan.
But the episode is being rerun, giving the viewing audience another chance to find out what culinary delights are conjured up from Gargunnock Village Store, run by Alistair and Violet Weir.
In the show, Scotland’s National Chef and Masterchef: The Professionals winner Gary vies against longtime friend, two-time veteran of The Great British Menu and chef patron of Glasgow’s The Sisters restaurant Jak O’donnell.
The friendly banter might be flying but the oven gloves were definitely off as the cooks battled it out to create their very best three courses with a £15 budget spent entirely at the corner shop.
The chefs were delighted to find lots of local fruit and veg, potted meat, local cheese and farmers’ bacon as well as a fresh herb bucket outside.
On the menu were bacon and mushroom tortellini, Yorkshire pudding, tart tatin and treacle scones, all aimed at impressing judges including local primary school headteacher Janine Rushton.
The episode will be shown again tomorrow (Saturday) at 8.30pm on BBC Scotland and can also be found on BBC iplayer.
