Golf walker Sophie has fair way to go

- ALASTAIR MCNEILL

A Wallace High School pupil is taking a shot at a charity walk to St Andrew’s Old Course.

Golf enthusiast Sophie Denholm, of Castleview Drive, will walk to the home of golf over two days this autumn with the aim of raising £3500 for the On Course Foundation.

The 17-year-old year, of Castleview Drive, Bridge of Allan, will cover a distance of 80km on September 26 and 27, supported by mum Christine.

Her route will start at Balhaldie and take in the Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Bridge of Earn and Newburgh, and on to St Andrews via Cupar, ending at the Old

Course’s Swilcan Bridge.

The S6 Wallace High School pupil has been dancing since she was two and hopes to perform and teach choreography after leaving school.

She is a regular visitor to St Andrews with her mum Christine and dad William, a member of Stirling Golf Club.

Sophie said: “I wanted use my time during lockdown to do something positive for others who are in need.

“I go to St Andrews a lot and spend most of my time there.

“My parents have always taken me to the Alfred Dunhill Links at the Old Course every year since I was a toddler.

“I decided to research some golf charities. On Course Foundation kept popping up.

“It is a remarkable and inspirational charity which helps to support the recovery of sick, wounded and injured veterans and service personnel through golf.

“These people have risked their lives for our country and I wanted to give them something back.

“I said to myself I am capable to walk 50 miles in two days, and when I have the drive to do something I’m determined to do it.”

She added: “My goal is to raise £3500 but it would be tremendous if I could exceed my target.”
