Where is investment in greener future?

-

Dear Editor

I read this morning on my news feed about the forward-looking Falkirk Council in their funding , building and opening of one of the largest electric vehicle charging stations in the country. They are to be warmly congratulated on this commitment to a greener future .

In contrast Stirling Council are intent on not only a path of environmental vandalism but also treating the electorate with further contempt in building a vanity project that the local communities are expressly against due to increased traffic, pollution, noise and the destruction of a green area with the construction of the ring road through Viewforth.

Surely it is not an enormous leap of faith or imagination to see that the future needs to be greener. Indeed fossil fuel is one eureka moment away from its demise in vehicles, currently (no pun intended); the sales of plug-in vehicles are on the rise and will continue to do so as prices fall and ranges increase, and drivers are getting the message. I myself intend to change from fossil fuel as soon as a rapid charger is within a reasonable distance from my flat.

Would it not make greater fiscal and environmental sense to increase the number of charge points all over the town and at the park and ride areas? Surely given its central location and that there is already a substantial electricity supply to Viewforth it is ideally placed for a charging station like Falkirk’s as it is close to all the local amenities. Then an electric bus service charging at the same site could ferry people round town, removing cars from the town centre, decreasing pollution and improving our town centre experience.
