STIRLING

Almost 200 players competed on Saturday in fine conditions for the Coronation Trophy after Friday was cancelled due to prolonged heavy rain and large swathes of the course and greens flooded. Scoring was excellent with 19 players returning 69 or better - 11 from Class 1

The contest was extremely close with five players all returning net 67s.

The in-form Dariuz Kunecki was four under par through the opening six holes, dropped shots at 7 and 8 to turn in 34. An inward 37 (35 net) came up just short for the trophy.

Euan Mclean won Class 2 but also failed narrowly on the trophy, three double bogeys at 7,8 and 15 proving costly on a great card with an inward nine of 38 (32½).

BRAEHEAD

Wednesday, August 19 saw a reason for double celebration at Braehead Golf Club.

Club secretary David Dick made a long service presentation award to Fraser Mcneill on completion of 40 years of service with the green staff at the club.

Fraser came to Braehead in 1980 to work while in his early 20s and has enjoyed the work so much he never found the need to move on. Fraser was congratulated on his achievement and he thanked the members present and stated that he has enjoyed his time at the club and will continue to do so for some time to come.

A further presentation was made by David to Peter Cunningham from Stirling, who has been a member of the club for the past 46 years. Peter has been an active member throughout that time and in his latter years was regularly seen taking part in the many seniors’ friendly matches and indeed competitions at the club.

To recognise this achievement, Peter was awarded an honorary lifetime membership of the club.

The Malcolm Spiers Trophy was played over the course on August 19. This is a four ball better ball competition and 30 teams took part in dry weather conditions.

Some excellent scores were recorded with the trophy being awarded to Rick Spencer and Val Buchan.

Results were: 1 Rick Spencer and Val Buchan 57; 2 Alan Reed and Duncan Chapman 60.
