Wheels in motion for cycle path revamp

- CHRIS MARZELLA

The first phase of a communityled project to redevelop Balfron’s cycle lanes and pavements is to get underway this month.

The Balfron Active Places project will see the village’s active travel and streetscape improved as part of a project between Balfron Community Council, Stirling Council and Sustrans.

A community consultation was carried out between February and October last year to draft up the plans for the project

A number of areas within the village will be developed as a result of the project.

As part of the first phase of work, improvement works to The Clachan and Printers Row are scheduled to start on September 28 and will last around ten weeks, subject to Covid-19 instructions.

The plans will address issues such as road junctions, safe road crossings, continuous usable footways, safe cycleways and connections to the wider area and existing path networks.

Stirling Council says that at certain points in the programme to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians and traffic there will be traffic management diversions in place, which will include temporary traffic lights and may on occasions also include temporary road closures.

Prior to the works starting, details of the diversions will be provided.

Balfron Community Council chairman, Colin Cameron, said: “The community council is delighted that these important developments are finally under way. They will contribute to a safer, more accessible and more enjoyable environment, and more attractive public spaces for the community.

“This is something we have been working towards for over five years in partnership with Stirling Council, Sustrans and many others, and we are very grateful for their support. The community has been consulted at every step of the journey and many alterations and improvements to the plans have been made as a result of their input.”

The next steps of the project are to take place in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 financial years, and dependent on funding, the council hopes to implement the improvements to Buchanan Street North and then Buchanan Street South.
