Rejected clubman torched building

A man set fire to a Callander gun club after being banned from joining over “concerns” about his interest in firearms.

Cameron Mills has admitted lighting rubbish in a bin and pushing it against the door of the Callander Target Sports Club on Christmas Day.

Mills, 24, told police he wanted to “cause economic damage” and shut down the 111-year-old club.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard Mills had previously approached members of the club with a view to becoming a member but “there was some concern about the accused’s interest in guns, and his membership was refused”.

Mills, from Callander, pleaded guilty to wilful fireraisin­g at the club.

Stirling and Clackmanna­nshire will move into level three of coronaviru­s restrictio­ns with people urged not to travel in and out of the areas.

In level three household gatherings are banned and outdoor meetings restricted but local restaurant­s - closed in the regional hospitalit­y shut down - are allowed to open until 6pm with no alcohol sales.

The First Minister delivered the government’s verdict on which areas will be placed under what level in the Scottish Parliament yesterday and urged “please comply”.

She warned virus cases across Europe are accelerati­ng adding national restrictio­ns could not be ruled out in future.

Ms Sturgeon reiterated: “If you live in a level three council area, please do not travel outside the council area you live in - unless you require to do so for essential reasons.”
