Popular painter who loved Stirling Well-known decorator John passes away, aged 79

-

Well-known Stirling painter and decorator John Pedder died on October 26. He was 79.

John Johnstone Pedder was born in Douiglas Stree, Stirling on July 2, 1941, second son of John and Janet and grew up in the family home in Gordon Crescent along with his brother Billy, his father’s sister Margaret and his grandparents.

He attended Raploch Primary and Riverside Secondary Schools and outside school, he was a member of the Boys’ Brigade, making lifelong friendships with boys who shared his sense of adventure.

At 15 years old, John was apprenticed into JD Smith

Painters and Decorators, starting a career that would last until retrement.

He took up boxing at Bannockburn Boxing C lube and trained with well-respected coach Jack Dormer. So successful was he with bouts across Scotland he became Scottish Boys Club Champion in 1958.

John met Helen Macdonald from Fallin and they married in the summer of 1963. They had three children Lyn, Lorraine and Ian and the family enjoyed regular summer holidays in Canada, visiting his mother.

He set up John Pedder Painters and Decorators in 1970 and over 35 years, built a successful business. Johnny and his workmen - including son Ian from 1986 - worked across Scotland. In addition to the painting, he enjoyed his occasional property developments.

In 2006, John hung up his paint brushes to spend more time with his family including his eight grandchildren.

A well known and popular face around Stirling, John always had time for everyone he met and people made time for him.

Sadly, dementia was diagnosed in 2010 and with typically determination and outstanding support from Helen, his family and carers, he battled the disease for 10 years, eventually moving into Wallace View Care Home early this year.

His family are grateful for the compassion and care from his home carers and Wallace View Care Home staff.

They said: “Johnny Pedder loved Stirling and the people of Stirling.”

His funeral is tomorrow (Thursday), leaving Co-op in Riverside at 10am, Family Service at Church of the Holy Rude (numbers limited) at 10.30am with burial at Cambusbarron at 11.30am.
