Get on yer bike boys...

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

Dunblane BB members have been pedalling all the way to Oz in a mammoth fundraising event.

The month of October was spent cycling the roads, pavements and lanes of Central Scotland (and beyond) as boys aimed to cycle the 10,000-mile distance from Dunblane to Brisbane, Australia.

BB members in the different age groups were given targets of 40, 75 and 100 miles respectively to cover during the 31 days of October and many who took part went well beyond their target.

During the month, word of their campaign reached several of the Boys’ Brigade companies in Brisbane itself and the Dunblane lads were delighted to receive three motivational videos from 1st, 45th and 46th Brisbane companies to keep them going towards the end of the month.

BB Captain Fraser Boyd said: “It has been quite inspirational to see how so many of the boys embraced this challenge.

“Along with parents and grandparents (some of whom are BB leaders too) they took on a huge team effort and raised just under £9,000 to date through very generous sponsorship. I would like to thank everyone who took part and all who donated. This sets us up really well for a year in which it will be very difficult to do our other usual fundraising activities.”

Boys and leaders cycled in their local area, while on holiday in the school break and even in their garage. Mileage was covered up to the top of

Dumyat, along coastal paths, as far north as Aviemore and as far south as Yorkshire. One member, when contacted by Test & Protect and told to isolate, had to complete the last third of his 100 miles in his garage on an exercise bike.

Meanwhile, one BB boy, not content with cycling 100 miles in October, is now running 150km this month to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Euan Campbell (16) is running a 5km distance every day this month to raise money for the charity.

Euan said: “I am running for the MS Society as my dad, Ross, was diagnosed with MS a few years ago and this is my way of supporting the wider MS community.”
