Crossing to shut for upgrade Diversions and trains off during weekend work

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

Network Rail will soon carry out vital improvement work at Cornton level crossing to enhance safety for both road and rail users.

Work will take place over two weekends in December to prepare the site for the installation of an upgraded full-barrier system, with remote sensing technology, to replace the current halfbarrier crossing.

In 2014 Cornton was identified as one of the top 10 level crossing accident blackspots in Scotland, however it had already been highlighted as a problematic crossing by drivers and pedestrians for almost two decades. Some measures have been put in place in recent years to ease issues.

The latest complex work being carried out – which involves signalling and track changes as well as the installation of a new building – cannot take place without the short-term closure of the crossing.

The B823/cornton Road will be closed from 23.30pm on Friday, December 4, until 6am on Monday, December 7, then from 11.30pm on Friday, December 11, until 6am on Monday, December 14.

Rail services through Stirling and Dunblane will also be suspended during the work and passengers should check their journey with their train operator, or with www.nationalrail.co.uk

Innis Keith, Head of Safety and Sustainable Development at Network Rail said: “The work we’re doing at

Cornton level crossing will improve safety for train passengers, road users and pedestrians.

“We know that the level crossing is an important through route for local traffic, and while we understand that a road closure is not ideal, the diversion route will mean disruption and inconvenience to the community is minimised.

“We apologise to anyone affected by this work and we thank you for your patience while we carry out these vital safety improvement works.”

Diversionary routes will be in place for motorists and pedestrians during the works.

Cars and LGVS will be diverted through Cornton Road, Fountain Road, Henderson Street, Airthrey Road, Causewayhead Road, Cornton Road and vice versa.

HGVS will be diverted via Cornton Road, Fountain Road, Henderson Street, Airthrey Road, Alloa Road, A91, Kerse Road, Burghmuir Road, Causewayhead Road, Cornton Road and vice versa.

Pedestrians are advised that an alternative route to cross the railway during the road closure will be at Easter Cornton Road.

Members of the public with questions about the work can contact Network Rail’s 24-hour national helpline on 03457 11 41 41 or find out more about the project at: https://scotlandsrailway. com/projects/cornton
