City display will bring in new year
Fireworks part of digital gig
Stirling’s Hogmanay fireworks display is to be beamed around the country on national TV.
BBC Scotland will ring in the new year by screening the pyrotechnics display from the iconic National Wallace Monument.
The event will be the showpiece event on BBC Scotland’s Hogmanay show, presented by Susan Calman.
The midnight display is also part of a digital Hogmanay offering that will be beamed directly into people’s living rooms via a variety of Stirling Council venue social media platforms and Stirlingevents.org.
There will be entertainment from venues around the city up to 11:30pm when Stirling residents can switch across to the BBC for the midnight fireworks.
With no mass gatherings possible this year, due to coronavirus, Stirling’s Hogmanay will move from Stirling Castle Esplanade to residents’ homes via the digital concert.
Stirling Council’s convener of the Community Planning and Regeneration Committee, Councillor Chris Kane said: “It is fantastic news that the BBC has chosen Stirling to help bring in the new year, and our fireworks display will help usher in 2021 for people across Scotland in a spectacular but safe way.
“It has been a challenging year but there are still so many things to celebrate in terms of the way that our communities have responded to the worst health crisis that we’ve experienced in our lifetime, and the resilience that we have shown to come through it.
“Our digital Hogmanay programme will celebrate all of this, while providing a safe way to say hello to 2021 and hopefully a brighter future next year.”
A BBC Scotland spokesperson said: “Hogmanay is a time when audiences always join us in huge numbers and this year Susan Calman will be joined by Deacon Blue, Amy Macdonald, Blazin’ Fiddles and guests for our Hogmanay 2020 show.
“We’re delighted also, that as part of that, we’ll show the fireworks from the Wallace Monument for a special midnight moment, with a little help from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.”
More details of what will be on offer, including times and how to view, will be released in due course.
