Chilly start to 2021 and more to come
Stirling welcomed the new year with a big freeze as the area was subject to a cold snap.
Temperatures plummeted, with thick frosts and ice seen throughout the area.
The Met Office issued a further warning, between Monday and Tuesday, for ice. The yellow warning was issued for much of the country, including Stirling and Clackmannanshire.
Stirling Observer columnist, Scott Mclean, who runs Stirling Weather, an amateur weather station located at King’s Park, warned of further freezing temperatures this week.
He said: “The cold spell of weather is set to continue over the coming days with maximum temperatures only a few degrees above freezing while overnight the temperature will drop close to freezing and later this week and over the weekend could drop to as low as -5 Centigrade.
“There will be more cloud around midweek which could at times lead to a few wintry showers but later in the week we should see some intervals of winter sun but some spells of wintry weather cannot be ruled out.
“Later in the weekend and into next week the temperature could increase slightly as a band of rain which will be wintry in some areas is currently forecasted. Winds will be mainly calm.”
It was a cold and frosty end to 2020, which also continued into the new year. The coldest 2020 Stirling temperature was recorded on Wednesday, December 30, when the mercury dipped to -3.8 Centigrade.
It only took two days of the new year to beat last year’s coldest day. On Saturday temperatures dropped to -4 Centigrade.
On the other scale, the highest temperature last week was 4.8 Centigrade. It was a relatively dry and calm week with only a few spots of rain and some wintry showers.
The maximum daily rainfall was 4.57mm on Thursday, December 31, for a weekly total of 7.87mm. Wind speeds topped 24mph on Sunday, December 27, and Thursday, December 31.
Did Youknow: On this day, January 6, in the last nine years we have only had one year –2018 – when the temperature on this day dropped below freezing, but before that during 2011 and 2010 we recorded freezing daily low’s of -6.0 Centigrade and -8.7 Centigrade respectively.
