Raploch man had sword during confrontation

-

A man has dodged jail after turning up with a sword to confront his ex-girlfriend’s dad and brother for slagging him off.

Jay Haney of Hawthorn Crescent, Stirling, shouted and swore and banged on doors and windows and challenged her dad and brother to a fight.

Prosecutor Kristina Kelly said 23-year-old Haney’s ex’s brother tried to calm him down, but he continued to act aggressively.police were called to the incident, in Carronshore, Falkirk, and the sword was found.

At Falkirk Sheriff Court last Thursday, Haney, pleaded guilty to committing a statutory breach of the peace and possessing an offensive weapon.

His solicitor, Virgil Crawford, said: “There had been a falling-out and the brother and uncle of his ex-girlfriend had been sending him messages, making their views of him known.

“When Mr Haney was under the influence he went to speak to them about it.

“I think it’s fair to say it was always likely to degenerate into what it did.

“It was never likely to be a pleasant conversation, when he was going there under the influence.

“He was apprehended very shortly afterwards.”

Mr Crawford said that since the incident, on June 27 last year, Haney’s alcohol intake had “very significant reduced”.

Sheriff Christopher Shead ordered Haney to carry out 275 hours of unpaid work and placed him under supervision for 18 months.

He added: “If you don’t comply you’ll be brought back and sentenced again for these offences – and that will be a custodial sentence.”
